Design Detour: John Wooden Interiors

John Wooden Interiors is all about the edit — a modern and tailored approach to residential and commercial interiors that feels layered for real life but never superfluous. With a love of history and a deep connection to architectural forms, Wooden and his team turn out sophisticated rooms that incorporate raw and refined elements in impactful, unexpected ways. "Respecting architecture, the landscape, and the interior ensures a harmonious environment," says Wooden, "one that’s unique to each project and classic in its ability to stand the test of time."

"My favorite off-the-beaten-path restaurant in town is AhbA. To me, it embodies the spirit of Old Laguna — funky and unique, authentic and unpretentious — and their healthy, Mediterranean-inspired food is amazingly delicious. I always enjoy introducing people to this little spot. If I had to choose guests for my dream dinner, I’d love to share an evening at AhbA’s big communal table with my grandfather (former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden), Betty White (I always wanted to set Papa up with her after my grandmother passed), Martha Stewart (because I love her Instagram feed), Pierre Yovanovitch (my current French design crush), and the talented team behind the Pierre Augustin Rose brand, Pierre Bénard, Augustin Deleuze and Nina Rose. Their furniture line constantly inspires me."

HOT TIP

"My friend Jim Olarte is hands down my favorite local artist here in Laguna. He’s a modern-day beachcomber and macramé craftsman who creates artwork from rope and treasures he finds washed up on local beaches. Whether it’s a commissioned piece for a collaborative client, colorful tendrils of macramé, or a sculpture composed of fiberglass boat fragments, Jim’s work adds an organic and local feel to our projects."

BRIGHT IDEA

"Mixing new light fixtures with other vintage and antique pieces is a great way to instantly add character to a newly designed space. I never want a room to feel like everything in it is brand new. Circa Lighting provides us with a great foundation to build from, while adding in antique elements provides the unexpected layers that are essential to bespoke design. The Piro Large Chandelier by ED Ellen Degeneres reminds me of a midcentury Italian fixture and would add a "found" feeling to the room. At a dim setting with frosted bulbs, this piece provides lovely diffused lighting for a dining space."

STOP IN

"Vertigo Home, located in the South Village of Laguna, offers an eclectic mix of high-design furniture, accessories and gifts — a little something for everyone, just like Laguna Beach itself."

TRY THIS

"I love using natural, woven wallcoverings to add texture and luxury to a space without making it feel too formal. Phillip Jeffries has a tightly woven Japanese paper weave (All Wound Up) that I’ve used on many projects throughout the years. Grasscloth and paper weaves are like an elevated raffia and always lend a classic, beach house feel to bedrooms and living spaces."

"The shape of the shade, articulating arm, and tripod base of the Moresby Floor Lamp by AERIN provide a sense of whimsy as it appears a bit bird-like. This is the perfect reading lamp for a cozy corner."

"The Claribel Large Table Lamp by AERIN is beautiful in its shape and simplicity. The scale is great for a bedroom and would add a welcomed pop of color to any room."

"Indirect lighting is always flattering in a dining area. I would mount four of Kelly Wearstler's Utopia Large Reflector Sconces in a grid over a dining table; the repetition and scale would create a stunning impact."
