Design Detour: Breegan Jane

If there were a recipe for Breegan Jane’s signature take on modern, approachable luxury — “casual glam,” as she calls it — it might go something like this: one part neutral palette, one part clean lines, a sprinkle of smartly incorporated metallics and some eye-catching texture as a final flourish. “My clients depend on me to capture and translate both their personalities and their needs. In L.A., that often means a space that features a bit of sparkle and can still handle sandy toes with ease.”

RSVP

Calamigos Guest Ranch is a little slice of heaven on earth and a personal favorite of mine, and I would happily invite a ton of people for dinner there if I could: iconic interior designer Kelly Wearstler, Kelly Slater, Oprah, Martha Stewart and Beyoncé.”

STOP IN

“I love Wertz Brothers Furniture in Santa Monica — 55,000 square feet of what I like to call 'treasure hunting.' I love that it’s a family-owned and a family-run business, and you can definitely feel the community aspect of the operation if you’ve lived in the area long enough. The owner has sourced pieces for iconic designers, and he’s always willing to help source the perfect item anytime I visit. One of the first things you’ll notice when you go to Wertz Brothers is the signature oversized chair in front of the store. That detail has always felt very funky and very L.A.!”

BRIGHT IDEA

“I recently designed Anne Sisteron’s flagship store in Beverly Hills, and I used the Frame Makers Picture Light by Chapman & Myers above the photography of her jewelry. In a space like a high-end jewelry store, each design element must be as stunning as the jewels they complement. A nice piece of brass above artwork has a way of elevating it in an effortless manner. It definitely requires planning where the artwork will be positioned in order to properly arrange for your electrical work, but the elegant result is well worth it.”

HOT TIP

“I regularly use artwork from businessman, investor and artist Arthur L. Reese, who was part of one of the first Black families to come to Venice Beach in the early 1900s. I’m inspired by his amazing life story, and his black-and-white photography is neutral enough to work in almost any space I design. Reese’s work is playful, artistic and thought-provoking. It has such depth, and I love that it regularly inspires conversations about our region’s rich history.”

TRY THIS

“I’m loving the bold, global prints in the Antonina Vella Bohemian Luxe collection from York Wallcoverings. I love using wallpaper in bathrooms, but I put my own spin on it by framing it in molding to create a picture wall.”

“The Melange Pill Form Sconce by Kelly Wearstler is such an interesting way to dress up a wall. The combination of materials calls to me — it’s an excellent way to utilize stone on a wall without installing it in large format.”
