Design Detour: Jamie Naugle

From modern-industrial touches to a well-placed pair of leather club chairs, Jamie Naugle’s rooms evoke both strength and serenity, a signature mix that speaks to the designer’s sure hand and sharp eye for detail. At projects throughout the city, Naugle employs a symmetry and a pared-back palette — a perfect environment for colorful Austinites to make their own. “We’re at an exciting moment in this city, design-wise,” she says. “There’s a lot of growth and everyone moving here brings a different aesthetic, but Austin will always be funky and eclectic at its core.”

RSVP

"My favorite local spot for dinner or the perfect nightcap is Peche on West 4th. It’s everything you could want: a dark & moody atmosphere, classic cocktails (including an absinthe drip!) and the kind of French cuisine you dream about when you’re sitting at home eating a bowl of ramen. My Ideal dinner guests would be Oprah (because every conversation is a therapy session) and Thom Filicia...he always keeps it 100% real and hilarious. I’d also invite Emily Blunt because she’s so effortlessly fab.”

STOP IN

"From its funky and bold patterns to its cool and casual vibe (always elevated, never kitsch), Supply Showroom is quintessentially Austin. We like to push clients out of their comfort zone, and we head to Supply when the project needs a little more ‘zhuzh.’"

BRIGHT IDEA

"I love a room layered up with lighting — a chandelier, wall sconces, table lamps and a floor reading lamp (my favorite is the Hargett Bridge Arm Floor Lamp by J. Randall Powers)... give me all the things. It’s important to position your lighting at various heights and use a variation of brightness to bring the room to life and create an undeniable mood.”

HOT TIP

“Texan painter Austin Allen James is my go-to for atmospheric paintings. He describes his art as 'diaphanous and ghostly,' almost like a form of visual meditation. I find they bring a deep sense of calm and subtle beauty to a space, never distracting and always complimentary to its surroundings.”

TRY THIS

“One recent obsession is anything by Kelly Ventura — her floral prints are bold and layered, which is very representative of the Austin I’ve known and loved. We’re using her Peonia wallpaper in the dining room of a current project, and I can’t wait to see it installed!”
