SHOWHOUSE SPOTLIGHT

House Beautiful Whole Home

The fifth annual Whole Home marked a first for House Beautiful. Rather than building a new home, 12 of today’s most compelling designers were invited to reinvigorate an existing property in the Buckhead area of Atlanta, GA.

With Visual Comfort & Co. as their exclusive lighting partner, Lisa Adams, Ariene Bethea, Zoë Feldman, Leanne Ford, Ashley Gilbreath, Brynn Olson, DuVäl Reynolds, Jonathan Savage, Keia McSwain, Mark Williams and Niki Papadopoulos, and Whittney Parkinson each put their own spin on an area of the 11,000-square-foot space. The result? A breathtaking transformation full of inspirational ideas.

Kitchen Classics

Inspired by the home’s Tudor details, Whittney Parkinson reimagined an English-inspired kitchen for a modern family. Floor-to-ceiling windows and two O’Connor Chandeliers by AERIN above the kitchen island are reflected in a mirrored glass tile for the ultimate brightening effect.

Calm & Collected

A vintage English breakfast table in the kitchen and brass touches throughout the space bring the elegance.

Dash of Drama

In the wine niche and scullery, Parkinson embraced the moodiness (and the lack of windows) with Farrow & Ball’s Hopperhead, whimsical Morris & Co. wallpaper, and glamorous lighting. To the right, hand-painted lampshades by artist Sarah Blomfield of the Cotswolds align with the English influence.

Elevated Living

With twin loves of art and architecture, Zoë Feldman added interest with an arched window and Old World touches like zinc lanterns to the combination living room, garden room, and sunroom.

Cozy Corners

Two Thomas O’Brien sconces flank a built-in settee covered in a Morris & Co. floral velvet with custom Fabricut trim. The open space “begged for these little vignettes that would offer so many different moments of engagement,” Feldman told House Beautiful.

Tasteful Touches

An informal dining lounge pictured on the left by Jonathan Savage of Savage Interior Design was envisioned as funky and playful. “We wanted to have an overall feeling that you could put your feet up,” Savage said. On the right, Savage devised “a welcoming yet interesting powder bath” near the entryway thanks to graphic pattern play and art placed throughout to feel like a gallery. A custom vanity in coastal grey by Caesarstone pairs with a vinyl wallcovering by Arte and a mosaic floor by Ann Sacks.

Green Galore

The vision for the owners’ suite all began with the Sanderson drapery, Mark Williams and Niki Papadopoulos told House Beautiful. Embroidered with leaves and acorns, its palette of greens naturally flows through a series of rooms designed for the primary homeowners.

Occasion for Opulence

Lighting at different levels draws the eye to the 14-foot vaulted ceiling — where the glass crystal beads of the triple-strand Sean Lavin chandelier makes for a luxurious moment. To the right, fluid forms and tone-on-tone palettes in the primary bathroom create harmony.

Open Air Mix

“The sitting room is really like a living room for the owners,” Papadopoulos told House Beautiful. “We wanted it to be a place where you could sit down in the morning, read the paper and have a cup of coffee while enjoying the fire.” The cast-stone fireplace occupies center stage as “the star of the room,” Williams added. An oak ceiling meets a rough textured stone floor and Bancha-saturated walls. Suzanne Kasler’s articulating floor lamps define the garden-view space.

Media Magic

Bathed in Bancha by Farrow & Ball with a stitched-hide Arte wallcovering and luxe lighting, Keia McSwain at Kimberly + Cameron Interiors envisioned a multifunctional media room that beckons the whole family to gather together.

Inviting Neutrals

Leanne Ford put her signature minimal style — as well as her Crate & Barrel line — in the teen suite. Plush textures and a palette of warm neutrals (including walls and ceiling painted in the same color for a cocooning effect) create coziness. Slipcovers and a wipeable high-gloss finish make it livable for kids!

Irreverent touches like the rope-draped chandelier and hand-drawn charcoal crownwork along the ceiling by mural artist Carolyn Kelly keep the space fun and relaxed.

Places to Gather

Under a covered porch outdoors where curtains can close for additional privacy, designer Ashley Gilbreath arranged a variety of intimate gathering areas, including a round table beneath a stately aged-iron ring chandelier.

In the Mood

“I like to create moods, and lighting is the most important factor in a room,” designer DuVäl Reynolds told House Beautiful. “You don’t have to move furniture; just flick a switch.” In the dreamy studio apartment-like space, Reynolds sourced more than ten different light sources, from floor lamps to flush mounts, to achieve an enchanting retreat.

Curl Up

A whimsical Moooi wallcovering by Arte on the ceiling lends the suite’s color scheme. The closet is refined and romantic thanks to Farrow & Ball’s Sulking Room Pink and the Calais Large Semi-Flush by Niermann Weeks.

Higher Level

In an additional guest suite by Brynn Olson, the glass shades of the midcentury modern Casoria Large Two-Tier Chandelier by AERIN direct the focus upward to a nearly 16-foot-high cathedral-like ceiling.

The canopy bed and sleek sconces further accentuate the ceiling height. A handcrafted grasscloth wallcovering by Phillip Jeffries and a sculptural Kelly Wearstler table lamp bring in organic texture.

Lasting Impression

Light plays a large role in the office. With her penchant for shapes, Ariene Bethea knew instantly she wanted the updated paper-lantern pendant in the conference room, she told House Beautiful.
