Design Detour: Melanie Roy
After 15 years in television, Melanie Roy changed lanes to focus on interiors and got a running start under the tutelage of design legend Ellie Cullman of Cullman & Kravis. At her namesake firm, Roy balances her own aesthetic (clean, contemporary and luxe) with the functional needs of her clients to create elevated backdrops for real life. “Design in the Hamptons is the epitome of modern luxury,” she says. “I try to create spaces that are sophisticated and comfortable for the entire family to enjoy.”
RSVP
There are so many stylish people in the Hamptons, it’s impossible to pick a few favorites, so for my dream dinner party I’m going old school: Dorothy Draper, Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Lucille Ball, Johnny Carson, Princess Diana, Coco Chanel and Henri Matisse. Duryea's Lobster Deck is one of my favorite spots for great seafood—it’s right on the water and always feels like you’re on vacation!
STOP IN
Todd Merrill Studio has extraordinary one-of-a-kind pieces, and Comerford Home is wonderful for tabletop items, pillows, throws and cool furniture.
BRIGHT IDEA
“I always like to use a chandelier to define the center of a room, but it’s essential to include sconces, floor lamps and recessed lights as well. I love to add Bonnington Wall Sconces to the mix—they’re sexy and substantial.”
HOT TIP
I love Erik Skoldberg’s use of color on canvas and surf boards.
TRY THIS
Kravet’s quick-ship performance fabrics are always a great option, and Stitch It Up in Indigo is a go-to for my Hamptons projects.
