Design Detour: Me and General Design

To borrow a term from the editorial world, the work of husband-and-wife design team Me and General Design might best be described as camera-ready. The firm’s “General” is General Judd, an 18-year veteran of Blue Man Group, and his partner Cristina Casanas-Judd is a set decorator with a background in film and television.

The duo refers to the aesthetic of their richly layered rooms as minimal essentialism, with pattern-heavy nods to Cristina’s Chilean heritage and warm references to General’s Southern roots featured throughout. Here as ever, great production takes a full cast of characters, and Cristina and General cherish and champion a diverse roster of artists and artisans whose custom pieces play a starring role in their projects.

STOP IN

“We’re fortunate to live within walking distance of The Brooklyn Museum, and their exhibitions and events provide inspiration throughout our community. The art we encounter there is an opportunity to expand ourselves and the possibilities of the world around us. We would love to meet some of our most creative friends there -- Black Artists + Designers Guild founder Malene Barnett, Dave Chappelle, business coach and former ballet dancer Holly Howard and musician Sebatian Vegas. Actually, on second thought, everyone is invited to join us. Cheers!”

"Our very own Nouveau wallpaper (from our collection with Wolf-Gordon) is 100% New York. The more you look at it, the more it changes."

BRIGHT IDEA

“We’re using the Orbel wall sconce throughout the corridors in our multi-residential project in New Jersey, due for completion in 2023. We love its geometric design and the subtle elegance and essential amount of light it brings to the entrance of each residence.”

HOT TIP

"Mark Jupiter (who created four custom modern tractor stools for our Denver project featured on the cover of House Beautiful in November 2020 House Beautiful cover) puts heart and soul into every piece he creates. The craftsmanship and passion that goes into his work is out of this world. Also, he and his team have the best barbecues. We also love collaborating with our friend Laolu Senbanjo on custom pieces for our SWICK Board project, and we recently fell hard for the work of Xenobia Bailey -- don't miss her Funktional Vibrations mosaic at Hudson Yards."

“We love Suite NY not only for their top-notch design selections, but also for the family culture they extend to their clients. From support to social events, there’s so much to experience, and we always feel the love when we visit.”
