Design Detour: Laura Thurman

Laura Thurman has a reputation for gutsy rooms, where clean and modern lines are shaken up by textural moments and well-placed jolts of color. “I’m so inspired by the ways color is celebrated in different parts of the world,” the designer says, musing on bright pink and blue houses silhouetted by the sun.

With a steady stream of transplants moving to Nashville from bigger metropolitan areas, Music City has proved to be a perfect place for Laura to build a body of work for clients who appreciate her fresh and elevated outlook. Next up: a house deep in the country, where she’s leaning into the woodsy, organic mountain-lodge vibe.

RSVP

“Urban Grub is always delicious. I’d love to have dinner there with Chad James, Lori Paranjape, Eric Ross, Amhad Freeman and my go-to photographer Daniel Christopher. Good people, good energy, good food -- that sounds perfect.”

TRY THIS

“Relativity Textiles have traditional elements but their global aesthetic is inspired by world travel, which totally speaks to me. This Arabian Nights pattern looks great in a powder room. l us about your aesthetic and how you fit into the city’s design personality.”

BRIGHT IDEA
“Lighting is such an opportunity to elevate and flatter a space with a sculptural, artistic element. I love Moroccan-inspired pendants, Japanese rice paper lanterns and bold, graphic shapes like the Phoebe lamp by Kelly Wearstler, which resembles river stone."

HOT TIP

“I placed a pair of watercolor gouaches with silverleaf details by fine art painter Rebecca Hunter of The Honest Brush in a master bedroom -- her work adds such a lovely layer to any room."

STOP IN

Antiques South Windermere and Elizabeth Stuart Design are always treasure troves for antiques, vintage pieces, and one-of-a-kind accent rugs, and I love picking up a julep cup from Croghan’s Jewel Box on King Street to display fresh blooms.”
