Design Detour: Jane Abercrombie

After a decade and a half in New York, Louisiana native Jane Abercrombie headed south to Nashville and launched her namesake interiors firm. Seven years later, no project in her portfolio is quite the same, though they all bear her traditional-meets-personal signature.

In Abercrombie’s world, color tends to be saturated and classic architecture is sacrosanct. Otherwise, change is a constant, which makes dynamic Nashville (“the ultimate word-of-mouth town,” according to the designer) a perfect place to call home.

RSVP

“I’d love to have ceviche and oysters at Henrietta Red with a big group of old friends and design friends — Ed and Nicky Nash, Stephanie Sabbe, artist James Worsham of Handy Dandy Productions and Britt Forrister of The Lot showroom and Andra Eggleston, to name a few.”

TRY THIS
“Electra Eggleston’s founder Andra Eggleston is daughter of photographer William Eggleston, and they collaborate on a textile line that works beautifully for pillows, lampshades and drapery. I just used her watery Habana print in Riviera for curtains in a dining room over chinoiserie wallpaper.”

BRIGHT IDEA

“Landing on the right balance of lighting is truly like finding the perfect piece of jewelry. Sometimes you need something simple and architectural, and other times it needs to be more elaborate or formal. I use the Dean picture light in a lot of my projects, especially over a mirror in a powder room."

HOT TIP
“Reed Smythe & Company’s gorgeous hand-blown bulb vases and wine rinsers are perfect for floral arrangements and great to punctuate a project. I gave them as gifts to my clients last Christmas and I love the jewel tones in my own home as well.”

STOP IN
“I use Nashville Rug Gallery for almost all of my projects. They sell antique rugs but they also have their own line, which is great for custom sizes and colors.
