Design Detour: Gen Sohr

After two decades working with storied brands on the West Coast, Gen Sohr of Pencil & Paper Co arrived in Nashville in 2012 ready to roll. From the foundational layers of a room to the objects and vignettes that make it memorable, Gen nails the balance — polished and personal, timeless and whimsical, classic and modern — every single time. The Pencil & Paper aesthetic (think Carrara marble meets white subway tile, with a dash of aged brass and a healthy dose of chintz, check, ikat and stripes) is particularly well suited to Gen’s adopted city.

“It’s no secret we adore pattern and a happy color palette,” she says. “I think the mix is perfectly reflective of our community and the blending of old and new traditions.”

HOT TIP

“I love Kayce Hughes’s playful paintings. This beautiful red, white, and blue piece reflects her unique style and eye for color.”

TRY THIS

“Every time I walk past our happy little powder room I can't help but smile...there's just something about Josef Frank’s whimsical illustrations and the optimistic color palette of Schumacher’s Citrus Garden that instantly lifts my mood and feels so welcoming."

BRIGHT IDEA

“Choosing the right lighting for a space is like complimenting your favorite dress with the perfect accessories. We love to play with scale and an element of surprise, but always with a nod to the classics.”

RSVP

“I can’t wait for dinner parties and social events to safely begin again! We're dreaming of cocktails alfresco at Cheekwood Botanical Gardens, and so ready to host a magical lunch with our favorite local ladies. On the design side, I’d invite Sarah Bartholomew, Stephanie Sabbe and Rachel Halvorson. To mix it up, I’d invite legendary Nashville hostess and philanthropist Clare Armistead, artist Kayce Hughes, musician Holly Williams, retail guru Kimberly Lewis and hometown superstar Reese Witherspoon.”

STOP IN

“No room is truly complete without a healthy dose of vintage and antique pieces with history in the mix. We never miss an opportunity to scour Gaslamp Antique Mall and Wonders on Woodland for local treasures! And don't miss Holly Williams’s White’s Mercantile for the perfect edit of southern favorites.”
