Design Detour: Bria Hammel

“Pretty but not precious” is something of a mantra for interior designer Bria Hammel, whose namesake firm is known for creating lovely backdrops for family life. With projects throughout the country and across every conceivable architectural style, Hammel delivers spaces designed to provide both comfort and delight. “We always strive to have a level of coziness, especially since it can get so cold here,” she says. “But since we really do experience all four seasons, we make sure every room has a fresh, airy feeling to remain appropriate year round.”

“We love Spoon and Stable—the menu, the James Beard Award-winning chef, the ambiance, the design, all of it. It’s great for a quick cocktail at the bar or dinner in the gorgeous dining room, and we always recommend it to anyone visiting Minneapolis. It would be fabulous to have dinner there with Mpls.St.Paul Magazine’s style editor Madeline Nachbar, bloggers Maria Vizuete of MiaMiaMine and Kate Arends of Wit & Delight, photographer and creative director Wing Ho of Canary Grey, Evereve founder Megan Tamte, the team from Jkath Design Build + Reinvent and Julia Miller of J.Miller Interiors.”

TRY THIS

“The small scale of Mobby by Kettlewell Collection is so versatile, and we love how all of the colorways balance warm and cool tones. We’ve used it for custom pillows, and it would make great window treatments too.”

BRIGHT IDEA

“We love oversized lighting—scale can be difficult to master and we say go big or go home. The Piaf Large Chandelier by Thomas O'Brien is perfect over a dining table or in a breakfast nook.”

HOT TIP

Abbey Holden’s custom landscape canvas pieces are stunning. We’ve had so much fun seeing Illume candles grow in popularity over the years, and we love their MPLS roots. One of our favorite scents ever is their Coconut Mango. Fairbault Woolen Mill Co. makes the softest, most luxurious blankets steeped with so much history.”

STOP IN

“We launched Brooke & Lou to bring our traditional classic design style to a broader audience. Obviously it’s our taste, and we pull everything from there from furniture and lighting to kitchen styling pieces. Outside our own shop, our stylist loves to source pieces in a range of styles and price points from The Foundry Home Goods, Gray Home & Lifestyle and Victory Vintage.”

“The Hackney Single Sconce in Antique Nickel by J. Randall Powers feels like a modern take on a traditional sconce. The cone shade is so beautiful!”
