Design Detour: Paul Corrie

Tempering classical and stately design elements with modern lines, Paul Corrie creates rooms with an old soul and a fresh face. In Corrie’s view, great materials like natural stone, unlacquered brass, linen and velvet are meant to be well-loved, and balance often comes in the form of durable outdoor fabrics on key upholstered pieces.

“Because Washington, D.C. is a very transient city, I encourage my clients to surround themselves with casually elegant, personalized pieces,” Corrie says. “The goal is to create a collected, yet livable environment.”

Le Diplomate is reminiscent of a Parisian brasserie, with an atmosphere of lively patrons enjoying traditional French cuisine.  The setting would be an absolutely perfect setting for abundant conversation and quality time together. My dream dinner party guest list would be Pete Buttigieg, Emily Blunt, Abby Phillip, Michelle Obama and Miles Redd.”

TRY THIS

“The black-and-white palette of Pierre Frey’s Jalapao is so classic, and applied to drapery it lends a lovely, organic feel suggesting delicate movement.”

BRIGHT IDEA

“I'm very much a fan of mixing task lighting with ambient lighting. The effect can be dramatically different depending on the time of day. I'm also a big proponent of mixing metals in lighting elements, again, it lends itself to a collected environment.”

HOT TIP

Stephen Benedicto is an exceptionally talented young artist who works with graphite, plaster and varnish. There's a certain simplistic tension and mystery that exists in his pieces -- they’re modern, edgy, and very moody. I'm drawn to the energy they bring to my interiors.”

STOP IN

David Bell and his partner Tom Preston have exquisite taste, and the pieces they curate are a stylized ‘step outside the box’ for Washington, D.C.  Their aesthetic lends itself to the collected interiors I favor.”
