Design Detour: Erin Gates

It’s no accident that Erin Gates imbues every project with a story—after all, voice and heart are two of her most enduring tools of the trade. Known for her candid approach to designing for kids, furry friends and families of every description, the author, blogger and interiors expert creates chic and comfortable backdrops that can stand up to real life.

“I love mixing traditional style with modern touches,” Gates says, “and Boston is all about respecting history while evolving into a more modern version of itself.”

RSVP

“As a mother of two young kids, I’m not so up on hot spots, but I love Mistral for drinks and food. I’d love to have dinner there with Nina Farmer, Rachel Reider, Katie Rosenfeld, Kate Coughlin and Lisa Tharp, as well as Erika Tarantal (my best friend and WCVB's evening anchor), author Celeste Ng, and Amy Poehler...she's from Boston, does that count?”

HOT TIP

Elena Boiardi lives in my neighborhood and is such a talent. It takes extraordinary patience to do the work she does! We sell her work in our shop—ceramic jewelry trays, small ring dishes and small boxes, all handpainted to look like faux shagreen. They’re really special and make a perfect gift!”

BRIGHT IDEA

“I always like to have light on several visual planes—ceiling, wall and table, if possible, to allow for various moods and times of day. I think adding sconces or picture lights is such a great way to add that wall option that many people forget to consider. We use the TT Double Sconce ALL the time, both with and without shades- it's classic and totally looks great in modern and traditional settings.”

TRY THIS

“I used Sandberg’s Raphael in green in the powder room of my new house, and we've used it in a couple other bathrooms as well. It looks particularly gorgeous with deep green millwork and trim.”

STOP IN

“We love Landry & Arcari for rugs, Ramble Market for antiques/vintage, Lekker Home for modern/streamlined pieces and Weston Table for tabletop and gifts.”

“I love how the Paris Flea Market Grande Chandelier looks antique and mixes well with modern and traditional styles.”
