Southern Living Showcase Home 2019
The 2019 Southern Living Showcase Home
For the 2019 Southern Living Showcase Home in Nashville, Tennessee, builders Mary and Patrick Hatcliff of Hatcliff Construction sought the help of Architect Alyson Sailer and six talented southern designers to put a fresh twist on traditional style. Sailer, who modeled the home after Nashville’s Grassmere Historic Home (today it is the site of the Nashville Zoo), approached her design with such precision that she “counted bricks” of the original structure. “Character is often lost in new construction, but we wanted to show how to capture older-home details in smart ways,” Mary Hatcliff told Southern Living. Foyer by Kevin Walsh
Kevin Walsh of Bear Hill Interiors in Little Rock Arkansas opted for a square table instead of a ubiquitous round one saying, "Round would have been the obvious choice, but I wanted to shake things up a bit." He completed the look with a chintz table skirt and the Montmartre Medium Chandelier by AERIN above.
Living Room by Ashley Gilbreath
“Finding the perfect balance of old and new helps the look feel current yet traditional,” explained Ashley Gilbreath of Montgomery, Alabama. To avoid creating an overwhelming environment, Gilbreath divided the room into several seating groups that make chatting easier for guests. To do this, she opted for floor lamps - the Hargett Bridge Arm Floor Lamp by J. Randall Powers and the Grenol Floor Lamp - instead of table side lamps.
Dining Room by Becky Boyle
Simultaneously glamorous and cozy, the Adrianna Medium Chandelier by Ralph Lauren (with custom shades) takes center stage in this blue-hued dining space. “I wanted to wow people but also make them want to sit and stay,” explained Boyle. Contributing to the layered feel of the space, a pair of Wyatt Accent Lamps by Suzanne Kasler (with custom shades) sit brilliantly on an antique sideboard - the artwork above was adorned with ceramic flowers handcrafted by the artist, Caroline Boykin.
Master Suite by Betsey Mosby
“The way this space is situated in the back of the house made it feel like a hideout from the rest of the world,” explained Mosby. A pair of Balustrade Table Lamps and Dorchester Swing Arm by Chapman & Myers flank the elegant valance.
Master Bathroom by Betsey Mosby
For the master bath, which was inspired by Southern design icon Bunny Mellon, Mosby selected the elegant Wharton Chandelier by AERIN to light the freestanding tub. Atop the treillage, the Clout Tail Sconces by Barbara Barry illuminate his-and-hers vanities. The addition of soft blues in the drapes, rug and accent chair create the tranquil atmosphere.
Second Floor Landing by Kevin Walsh
This vibrant loft space showcases color use at its best. A pair of Chambers Medium Table Lamps by Christopher Spitzmiller in Aqua Crackle bookend a leafy green velvet sofa and tie in the adjacent cerulean chair. Classic design choices such as white walls and warm metals as seen in the Launceton Medium Square Lantern by Chapman & Myers in Antique-Burnished Brass allow for eye-catching furnishings and decorative accents. "Stick with colors that appeal to you [and] possibly bring in different shades of a color,” suggested Walsh.
Upstairs Bedroom by Betsey Mosby
With layered warm neutrals and delicate florals, Mosby designed this space with the utmost of feminine appeal. The soft lines of the Aria Medium Square Lantern by Julie Neill in Plaster White continue the bedroom’s whimsical elegance while the Whittaker Medium Table Lamp by Christoper Spitzmiller in Ivory atop the desk-turned-bedside-table maintains the overall airy feel.
Third Floor Lounge by Kevin Walsh
This small third floor loft is anything but the expected dark attic. A modernized version of board-and-batten paneling finished in a vivacious blue hue lines the walls and ceilings making the Prescott Mobile Chandelier by kate spade new york and the Bull Nose Cylinder Table Lamp by Chapman & Myers pop into focus.
Third Floor Lounge by Kevin Walsh
Walsh selected the Cara Medium Sculpted Pendant by Ralph Lauren to anchor the game table. Dual Cosmopolitan 18" Picture Lights by Thomas O’Brien illuminate modern artwork atop the door-framing wet bars creating a space that invites guests to kick back and relax.
Loft by Ashley Gilbreath
Soothing green walls are paired with neutral colors in the guest house loft. To save space beside the bed, Gilbreath opted for the Anette Floor Lamp by Ralph Lauren in Hand-Rubbed Antique Brass in place of a table lamp. The Estelle Display Lamp by Alexa Hampton illuminates a painting atop an antique chest.
Laundry Room by Hannon Douglas
A single Country Industrial Small Pendant by Chapman & Myers in Antique-Burnished Brass with White Glass hangs above the sink’s nickel gooseneck faucet, proving that mixing metal finishes can feel fresh and refined. Creamy white cabinets and natural touches such bamboo shades and storage baskets offer a simple elegance that keep this laundry room bright and edited.
