House Beautiful Whole Home Concept House 2019

For this year's Whole Home Concept House, House Beautiful teamed up with Castle Homes and Wellness Within Your Walls to build a 6,201-square-foot residence in Nashville, Tennessee. The idea was to not only create a home but an experience that activates the senses and evokes a feeling of joy. To achieve this goal, the team enlisted 14 talented designers from around the country to create beautiful spaces with a purpose. Foyer by Vern Yip

The Atlanta-based designer and television personality achieved beautiful livability in the two-story foyer. "Nobody wants to live in a museum where everything is so precious. We don't live like that today." Surrounded by a dragon-themed wallcovering, a custom cluster of eleven Blok Large Pendants by Tech Lighting hangs above and the Langham Display Floor Lamp by Ralph Lauren sits behind a party-ready, patent-finished table: "You don't need coasters!" said Yip. 

Living Room by Vern Yip

Yip created a living room that is simultaneously beautiful and functional. The Barrett Large Knurled Chandelier by Ralph Lauren takes center stage above a 15-foot sectional covered in one of Yip's performance fabrics. He said, "I've literally taken a black Sharpie to this fabric. You can remove anything from it."

Dining Room by Chenault James

Kentucky-based designer Chenault James reinvented the concept of a traditional dining room by incorporating a shape-shifting table built by her husband, Ed, of Four Board Woodworks—with three different uses: a ping-pong table, a dining room table, and a coffee table. "I wanted a table that could function for dining and ping-pong, but also convert to separate coffee tables. It was a big ask," said James. The Osiris Large Reflector Chandelier by Thomas O'Brien lends mid-century appeal to the space.

Kitchen by Matthew Quinn

"I obsess over saving people time—because time equals luxury," said Atlanta-based kitchen-and-bath expert Matthew Quinn. "In this kitchen, I focused on saving steps from the garage to the fridge, from the dishwasher to the cabinet. It all adds up."  The kitchen island's brilliant design—illuminated by the Covet Large Chandelier by Kelly Wearstler— features an easy-clean quartz countertop paired with a wood surface that has a charging pad underneath, and a custom built-in dog bed wrapped in indoor/outdoor fabric for furry friends. A pair of French Cuff Sconces by Barbara Barry flank the custom copper hood. 

Pantry by Matthew Quinn

Quinn added a touch of glamour by incorporating the Lucia Medium Pendant by Julie Neill over the sink and the sleek Dot 16" Flush Mount by Peter Bristol at the entrance of the pantry.

Breakfast Room by Modern Remains

"We commissioned art from Southern artists to give the space energy," said Modern Remains designer Evan Millard. The airy frame of the Desmond Cage Lantern in Gild and a pair of Strie Buffet Lamps by Chapman & Myers in Plaster White perfectly complement the red accents and gold custom-framed artwork. Custom-painted panels by Nashville artist Jennifer Gibbs unite the breakfast room's energetic palette. A vignette of custom-framed paintings by Charleston-based artist Whitney Stoddard gives the space charming depth and dimension. (Fun fact: Whitney named each lady after a different female country music star that she loves and admires!)

Girl's Bedroom by Amy Berry

"I thought of it as: How will they remember this when they grow up?" said Dallas-based designer Amy Berry. "I imagined the sister being older than her brother, so I wanted her room to be more sophisticated: a chaise for reading, a secretary for working, and a great bed." Berry upholstered the headboard, chaise and even the walls in blue-and-white fabrics to create timeless comfort throughout. The traditional Candlestick Swing Arm by Studio VC (with custom shades) provides perfect lighting for tasks such as reading. 

Boy's Bedroom by Amy Berry

Berry opted for a pair of Hudson Swing Arm by Thomas O'Brien (with custom shades) instead of table lamps to allow for more space. "The boy's room features less precious pieces—and fewer of them, so there is room to play," said Berry. 

Master Bathroom by Richard Anuszkiewicz

Kitchen-and-bath designer Richard Anuszkiewicz set out to create a place of rejuvenation to start and end each day in. He explained, "There is no need for the spa. Everything in here is light and bright, so immediately it feels relaxing." Hardware and lighting finishes were mixed throughout the space—including the Presidio Caged Small Sconce by Ian K. Fowler in Hand-Rubbed Antique Brass and the Archer Medium Chandelier by Ralph Lauren in Polished Nickel. 

Media Room by Modern Remains

"A media room doesn't have to focus solely on the television," said Lauren Moore of Nashville-based trio Modern Remains. "We wanted to design a space where you can tuck away with a book, gather with the family, or have movie night." Atop a platform, a pair of Hackney Bridge Arm Floor Lamps by J. Randall Powers flank two back-to-back chaises so guests can see over the leather sofa. The Antique Zinc finish of the Convector Rectangular Table Lamp by Chapman & Myers adds other layer of sculptural texture next to the sofa.

The Cleo Orb Base Desk Lamp by Kelly Wearstler lends modern sophistication to the media bar. 

Music Room by Forbes + Masters

"We're in Music City! What better way to use a bonus room than to turn it into a listening lounge?" said Monet Masters of Atlanta-based interior design team Forbes + Masters. The duo wanted to create an escape where you just want to chill out. "The ceiling paper felt a little trippy, which we loved, and the suede-like wallcovering reminded us of old-school speakers," said Tavia Forbes. The retro silhouette of the Belerra 48" Chandelier by Tech Lighting complements the 1970s-inspired furnishings throughout. 

Mudroom by Castle Homes

The Castle Homes design team built a mudroom where you can drop everything, and it always looks put-together. "There's no need to lug dirty sports gear or pet toys all over the house," said vice president Heather Looney. The Cannes Pendant by Ralph Lauren in Polished Nickel carries a touch of formality to the highly functional space. 

Back Porch by Barclay Butera

Newport Beach, California designer Barclay Butera used a blue and white palette to echo his love of the ocean and the coastal lifestyle.  "There's nothing wrong with buying an outdoor set, but add some personality," said Butera, who incorpated the classic Darlana Medium Hanging Lantern by Chapman & Myers into his design.
