DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT
A Norwegian Mountain Home’s Approach To Light
Known for refined, warm interiors rooted in the Norwegian landscape, B&B Studio creates homes where layered lighting plays a central role in how a space is experienced throughout the day.
Set within Norway’s dramatic mountain landscape, B&B Studio’s interiors are defined by a quiet balance of warmth, refinement and intention. Specialising in private residential projects, the studio creates homes that feel deeply connected to their surroundings, where natural materials, thoughtful layouts and layered lighting come together to support how people truly live. From expansive chalet living spaces to more intimate corners, each project reflects a design sensibility that is refined, warm, intentional, layered and enduring.

B&B Studio draws inspiration from both within and beyond the design world, with nature acting as a constant reference point through organic textures, muted palettes and an appreciation for imperfect beauty. This is complemented by influences from travel, particularly historic hotels and European apartments, as well as art and sculpture, which inform their sense of composition and contrast. Just as importantly, their work is shaped by their clients, with each project beginning from an understanding of how people live, gather and move through a space.

Lighting plays a central role in shaping B&B Studio’s interiors, with each scheme built through a layered approach that allows spaces to adapt throughout the day. Ambient lighting provides overall warmth, while task lighting supports everyday use, and accent lighting highlights architectural details and materials. Decorative fixtures introduce character, while dimmers and control systems allow spaces to shift from bright and functional to soft and atmospheric, which is particularly important in mountain homes where natural light changes dramatically with the seasons.

When working with Visual Comfort lighting, B&B Studio focuses on balancing beauty and function by combining decorative and architectural fixtures within each space. Light sources are layered at different heights to create depth and avoid flat lighting, while fixtures are selected for their visual presence as well as their performance, often acting as jewelry within the interior. A consistent 2700K light temperature is used throughout, with decorative lighting dimmed further to create a warmer, more relaxed atmosphere.

For B&B Studio, a successful interior is defined by how it feels to live in, with a focus on layering materials, textures and lighting to create spaces that are both functional and atmospheric. Each element is carefully considered so that rooms transition naturally from practical daytime use to a softer, more relaxed evening setting, with lighting from Visual Comfort & Co. playing a key role in bringing warmth, depth and cohesion to the overall design.

About the Designer
Founded in 2017 by interior architects Ane Bernthon and Nina Bjørland, B&B Studio was born from a shared passion for creating thoughtful, personal homes. After 13 years working at two of Norway’s leading interior architecture firms — with experience spanning residential, hospitality, and commercial projects — Ane and Nina decided to establish a studio dedicated primarily to the residential market. Today, nearly nine years later, B&B Studio has grown into a team of seven, working on both large and small high-end projects in Norway and abroad.
