Interior Designer Britany Simon’s
Sedona Retreat
Britany Simon’s commitment to texture, restraint and thoughtful lighting choices allow the surrounding landscape to shine at an award-winning private residence in the Upper Sonoran. Below, Britany muses on what inspires her designs, the crucial role of lighting, and "letting Sedona be the art."

My Kind of Lightbulb Moment...
“In a home like this, lighting has to feel like an extension of the natural rhythm outside and not something that fights it. Visual Comfort gave me and my team options that feel architectural and refined, so even when the lighting is doing a lot of work with task, ambient, or accent lighting, it still reads calm. The goal was always to support presence: These lights make the house feel glowy and grounded, not overlit or overdone.”
One of the Most Interesting Things About This Project Is...
“The limestone wall cladding, which reads almost like a living surface. Limestone is one of those materials that becomes even more beautiful when you light it correctly. We were intentional about using soft, warm light to bring out the texture and the way the stone shifts in tone throughout the day.”
Design Elements I Used On Repeat...
“Architectural callbacks like repeating a curve, or a profile or shape. For this project, I focused on a classic palette throughout, then created layered interest through materials like stone with movement, hand-applied finishes, warm textured wood, and one or two unexpected moments like metal or steel.”

If I Had To Pick One Favorite Detail It Would Be...
“The way we handled function invisibly — the concealed dog-feeding station, concealed storage moments, integrated cabinetry, the ‘everything has a place’ approach. It’s a huge part of what makes a space feel calm, and lighting plays a big role in that. Architectural lighting did the heavy lifting here with integrated layers that create ambiance, support daily use and allow the architecture and materials to stay front and center.”
“We also paid attention to the small, practical things like minimizing cords and clutter. One solution we love (and use often now) is portable, rechargeable lamps — like this Melange 8” Accent Lamp by Kelly Wearstler we used in the office.”

When I’m Not Designing I’m...
“Traveling! A great hotel lobby, a fun new restaurant, an art gallery or museum, or just wandering old streets in a new city… travel is my favorite reset and is always inspirational for me.”
