For actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler and her husband Cutter Dykstra, the pandemic triggered a need for change (or at least a change of scenery). Both their businesses were based in Los Angeles, where they lived at the time, but the new work-from-home flexibility brought on by the pandemic allowed them to think beyond California for the first time, and when a close friend moved to Austin, Texas, an interest sparked. It only took one scouting trip to Austin before the couple was returning to L.A. to pack their bags. The Spanish-style exterior of the home they purchased was stunning with warm white walls, a gorgeous tile roof, and a beautiful courtyard. However, the overly ornate interiors didn't quite fit the actress's more minimalist California style, so she enlisted L.A. designer Erin Fetherstone and the Texas-based design team at Phillips House, the new interiors arm of High Street Homes, to create a fresh layered look that interprets the classic California vibe through a Texas Hill Country filter.

Make it Work for You

The floorplan worked well for Sigler and her family, but the original interiors were too maximalist for her taste. To give the home a sleek cleaner look, Fetherston removed the existing ornate decorative elements, reshaped the central fireplace, and painted the walls a warm bright white. Dark wood beams and floors ground the space.

Choose a Neutral Color Palette

A neutral color palette can be just as interesting and warm as a bold bright one. It's all about the execution. In the living room and dining room, Fetherston played with tonal hues. Layered atop dark hardwoods, which the group buffed to a matte finish, natural rugs bring warmth to the large open space. Light fixtures including the Roark 40" Modular Ring Chandelier by Ralph Lauren and Fontaine Double Sconce by AERIN, add both drama and scale.

Celebrate Natural Light

"Painting the walls one consistent color allows you to embrace the natural light filtering in through the windows," says Phillips House co-founder Brett Phillips. "It also allows you to really embrace a variety of light fixtures." The mirroring Fontaine Double Sconces add immediate intimacy while showstoppers like the Charlton Grande Triple Arm Chandelier by AERIN add the right touch of drama.

Have Fun With Fixtures

The square kitchen island allowed Fetherston and Phillips House to get creative, and instead of a more traditional trio or pair of light fixtures, they hung a single Charlton Grande Triple Arm Chandelier by AERIN, giving the space a powerful punch of contemporary energy. The black-and-brass Clemente Wall Light (also by AERIN) ties back in the sleek cabinet hardware, creating a cohesive look.

Design a Chic Kitchen

Cabinets painted a moody green, which Fetherston and Phillips House matched to the exterior window and door trim, make a stylish statement in the kitchen. The brass hardware on the cabinets, kitchen range, and the Clemente Wall Light by AERIN add subtle sophistication.

Carve Out a Quiet Retreat

At its heart, this Spanish-style home is a family home, but it was important to Sigler and Dykstra to have a room of their own. To accentuate the primary bedroom's soaring ceilings, Fetherston chose lux, low-slung furniture. Sumptuous textures and fabrics amplify the room's serene atmosphere, while natural elements like the Toulon Table Lamp by AERIN anchor the space.
