Design Detour: Fiddlehead Design Group

By their own description, Fiddlehead Design Group is clever, practical and fun—and a scroll through the firm’s Instagram feed brings a few more adjectives to the fore. Led by Jen Ziemer and Andréa Dixon, Fiddlehead creates spaces that are layered in every sense of the word, from hygge touches like spool chairs, willow baskets and Mamluk rugs to traditional accents like blue-and-white ginger jars. “We design for a lot of families with kids and pets who need practicality, but also want their homes to look great,” says Dixon. “After we’ve tackled the function piece, we’re all about layering with color and pattern. We try to push our clients to think outside of the box...and beyond what their neighbor just did.”

RSVP

Young Joni has amazing food, great interiors and a fun vibe! I’d love to have dinner with the owner, Ann Kim, along with radio hosts Lori & Julia from FM 107.1 and Jason DeRusha from WCCO, Senator Amy Klobuchar, designer Billy Beson and Lizzo.”

TRY THIS

“We love using Phillip Jeffries - Rivets when we need a touch of masculinity and texture in a space—it has worked especially well for us in offices and bathrooms.”

BRIGHT IDEA

“Lighting really can make or break a project, and layering is key, as there are so many different functions when it comes to lighting. When we’re sourcing architectural and decorative fixtures from Circa, we make sure to highlight interesting structural features or pieces of art as well as provide enough functional lighting for all activities. We especially love the Cynara Chandelier by Chapman & Myers—it’s a stunner for sure, and a great conversation piece!”

HOT TIP

“Photographer R. J. Kern’s County Fair series so perfectly captures the emotions of children and draws the viewer in. Timber and Tulip pieces always bring a handmade, unique, fun and textural element to a space. Mercury Mosaics is great for handmade classic subway tile, and we love to support a women-owned business.”
